A small update for what was actually something like 5 hours of trekking south along the Rocky Mountain foothills.
This is Just a random hill along some dusty road along the way to Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump while avoiding herds of cattle and what not. Probably one my favourite pictures of the whole trip, for some reason.

So, as I was saying, the weather wasn't looking all that great but I continued on down the David Thompson Highway towards the Rockies. The highway was quickly getting lonelier, with mostly just recreational vehicles here and there to be seen. Once I actually got into the Rockies though, the weather quickly began to look up...

So way back on August 10th, I got a call at 9am from my manager asking me to go to Alberta for two weeks to help them out there because, what with the labour shortages, they were short handed and needed help to fulfill some customer commitments. Seeing as how I don't really travel much, other than for random road trips, I said yes to their request. Next thing I know, that Sunday I'm on a jet to Calgary.
I made sure I was prepared with my camera and actually used it (although I've realized I should have probably invested in a polarizing filter). Typically I bring my camera all over the place but don't really end up using it much. I must've ended up taking around 1000 pictures and about 5 videos this time though. Thankfully, good ol' Photoshop made some of them actually acceptable in the end. Hah.
Even though Alberta seemed to have an hour plus more daylight than Windsor and I was there for a whole two weeks, this still didn't leave as much time as I would've liked to actually go off and see and do things. I did work a good deal of the time, mostly during the day, but I did have some time off. So it turned out to be a whirlwind of work, followed by trying to see some sights before it got too dark out. Sometimes I had planned things out the night before although as you might be able to tell from the map below, some of it was just randomly picking seemingly interesting routes. And hey, it was all on the company dime so either way, win-win.
More or less a map of my travels...
And the unofficial theme song of my trip, "Like Killers" (WMA/MP3) by Hot Little Rocket. This was due to the fact that the van the company supplied me with was of the cargo variety and thus, had only a cassette player. :/ So much for all my CDs I brought. And the flights there and back would've been the only time I actually needed an mp3 player, seeing as how I've never cared to purchase one of those before either. Oh well. I was able to find the local campus stations though.
Anyway...
Like I said, I took a small mountain of photos, but there's only a medium sized pile that I'll actually share. And I'll spare everyone by spreading the posts out or something. So folks, please bear with me for the next however many weeks. Hah...

From the Detroit Tigers ALDS clincher game against the Yankees, October 7th, 2006
Even if they somehow manage to go all the way this year and win the World Series, there's no way that last year's magic can be duplicated. Despite that, and because we had so much fun going down to the ballpark last season, this season I went crazy and bought one of the season tickets packages. 
We're going to go to a bunch of games, and my brother is taking half of them, but we'll still have some left. So if anyone wants to go to a ballgame or two during the year for cheap (face value), let me know. :P

So I saw Sloan for approximately the thirtieth(!?!) time on Saturday night at St. Andrew's Hall...
Despite the fact that their latest album still hasn't given me any great hope of a flashback to their musical prime anytime soon, you can almost always count on them to put on a good show regardless. And good it was...

The gallery is a little heavier on the Patrick and Andrew side since she has a thing for them, of course. Hah.
Of note also, for some reason this particular show became some sort of mini Sloan-con event when a small posse of folks from the Sloan Message Board decided to attend. I was one of them (seeing as how I currently host the board) but didn't really participate. For the most part, I just devil horned them from afar since I am too shy. Hah.
Afterwards we were at the 7-11 in Wixom getting some Slurpees. Tracey noticed that one of the purple looking flavours had a plain white piece of paper over it instead of a label, and scrawled on it in black ink was the word "BAWLS". At the time it seemed like it was most likely the work of a prankster but upon researching, it turns out it's actually a quite real name for an over caffeinated beverage. How retarded.

Tracey alerted to me to this halo around the Moon visible on the night of January 2nd.
It's not really all that special or rare, just ice crystals way up high reflecting at just the right angle, but still kind of neat. You can sort of see a rainbow effect in parts of it.
The Windsor Star even had an attempt to show the halo in the paper the next day. Unfortunately, the photo was cropped so badly that only the overexposed Moon itself could be seen and it didn't show the halo at all. Lalz. Nice going Star.

A kind of neat image I took on December 19th around 6pm.
The bright line is the combined reflective light from the Space Shuttle Discovery during STS-116 and the International Space Station. They were only a few hundred meters apart at the time and had minutes before completed undocking. I had hoped they would be farther apart during the flyover so that they would be visible as separate points of light chasing each other but oh well.
The dotted line is one of the inescapable number of aircraft that are visible in the night sky around here.
The visible cluster of stars is M45, the Pleiades

My attempt at capturing comet McNaught on Wednesday evening
Unfortunately my lack of a long lens or a telescope didn't allow it to turn out very well. The approaching clouds didn't help either but oh well.
It was pretty spectacular looking through binoculars though.

Haha, last entry was May 25th, oh man.
I've been meaning to update this shit many times now but pretty much never get around to it. Oh well!
I'll post some proper things later on I guess but after this weekend I'll just say this...
We already had tickets to ALDS home game #2 but at almost the last minute Tracey came upon a tip to check out Ticketmaster. Someone must've released a batch of tickets because we were able to snag prime seats only six rows behind the Tigers dugout and ended up in the thick of this:
(although this particular pic is actually from over on the visitor's dugout side. Hah. You get the idea...)
I ended up selling my old game 2 tickets, at cost pretty much, to a local guy so he and his young daughter could go to the game too, so everybody won.
It was a pretty awesome weekend.

Oh shit, an update.
What has been happening? I dunno. I've just been going to lots of random shows, like Mogwai again (no My Father, My King still... boo), Pinback, oh and Belle and Sebastian and The New Pornographers (featuring only APW and fill in members) in Chicago way back in March with Tracey. Hah. We stayed in a sort of massive suite for free using approximately five years of my accumulated Air Miles points. Haha.
We also went to see the Comedians of Comedy in late March, which brought solid lols but Zach Galifianakis was not on the tour this time. That was kind of a downer.
More recently I finally went to see a Tigers game at the new ballpark last Saturday night. Hah. It was pretty fucking cool. Tracey and I had been meaning to go to a game for a long while I think but we never got around to it. It took free tickets from her father to get us going. Although we are already going again this Sunday, the fact that we didn't go to a game until the time the Tigers actually don't suck so far this season is merely a coincidence.
But yeah, it was a nice coincidence that the first game we decided to attend happened to be when the Tigers hosted their fourth largest crowd. And boy was it rocking there. Nice view of the city skyline and what not from the stands, which I already knew about really from the posts on the various detroit photo sites over the years.
Anyway, there was a dramatic 9th inning game tying home run after the Griffey grand slam earlier in the game that certainly made things extra exciting. Tigs ended up winning on a Reds error in the 10th. Hah. Oh, and some goon tossed an inflatable penis on to the field.
Nice touch.

Oh it figures! After I drove all the way down to Columbus last Thursday night to see Mogwai, I find out that they're playing right across the river at St. Andrew's in May! Oh well. That's ok. It was worth the trip though. And looking at the setlists it looks like they're changing up their sets a fair amount. So I'll most likely see them again in Detroit.

I usually always note whether or not a band plays my favourite song, which in this case is "My Father, My King". Unfortunately, that one is almost twenty minutes long. So.. heh.
It was a strange venue setup though inside a rather large auditorium on the Ohio State campus. The audience was all on the stage and Mogwai performed on a smaller sort of sub-stage off to one side. Sounded great though.
Stuart remarked how it was the "most civilized venue they'd ever played in" since there was no alcohol served. And I also remember him dedicating a song to "that guy that Dick Cheney shot". Hah.
Anyway, I had more to say but I have to head off to America for a few days.

Well, that was interesting.
I didn't really do all that much worth noting during Super Bowl week but it was nice to see the Windsor and Detroit areas both hopping all at once for a little while. Actually, Trace got some tickets for one of the Kimmel in Detroit tapings but we didn't bother trying to go since, as it turned out, you had to get there extremely early and stand in line forever to have any hope of actually getting in. It's not very often that there's a show like that taping in the area and it would've been cool to go but ya, we're both not too into standing in lines forever. Actually I'm probably way more tolerant of it than she is, but still, not THAT tolerant. Hah.
So anyway, yeah, it was a cool week I suppose until a couple folks got shot right by the fest activities in downtown Detroit but amazingly it didn't get enormously blown up like I thought it would've. Not that someone getting fucking shot is something worth glossing over but still, give Detroit a break. I think it deserves it.
Will Windsor/Detroit be able to capitalize on the momentum from the Super Bowl and actually begin some permanent progress? I don't know. I wouldn't be surprised if not, but here's hoping! I'd certainly like Detroit to become more Chicago-esque as possible. Not that I know a lot about Chicago. I was only there once though and assuming I go in March, it will only be my second visit. Apparently it's all the rage though since so many folks I know have moved or want to move there. Heh. But at least less bands would bypass Detroit in their tour itineraries that way :P
As for the Windsor side, I kind of like things the way they are. Maybe a little more expansion, but I don't want the city getting too big really. I prefer a smaller city to actually live in while conveniently having Detroit nearby for metropolis stuff.
You can't stop "progress" though. Hah. So whatever. We'll see what happens.
But I think our mayor may have let the momentum get to his head because he suddenly is telling everyone that Windsor should get a CFL franchise and I think flubbed and said that the border is not a problem anymore, as one of the reasons why a CFL franchise here would work. Wow. I don't know. He must be high from something he took at one of those Super Bowl parties.
Ah well.
On to other business.
Should I go see Mogwai in Chicago or Columbus in March? Ugh. I really don't feel like driving 3 hours alone, but I really want to see them again! I should probably decide before the tickets sell out. Indeed.
